And what it taught me about marketing your business.
I Got Busy Building. And Stopped Showing Up.
I'm going to be real with you.
I was landing clients. Setting up systems. Learning new AI tools. Doing the actual work. The behind-the-scenes grind that nobody sees but everything depends on.
But I made the same mistake I tell my clients not to make. I went silent online.
No posts. No updates. No proof I existed.
For 30 days, my agency, a digital marketing agency, had zero digital presence. Let that sink in for a second. The guy who helps businesses show up online disappeared from the internet. I'm not proud of it. But I'm not going to sit here and pretend it didn't happen either.
I was so focused on building the thing that I forgot to show people the thing was being built. And if you're running a business right now, there's a real good chance you're doing the exact same thing.
If You're Not Posting, You're Not Existing
Here's the lesson I had to relearn the hard way.
It doesn't matter how good your service is. It doesn't matter how many clients you're serving or how many late nights you're putting in. If people can't **see** you, they can't **choose** you.
That's true for my agency. And it's true for your business.
Visibility isn't vanity. It's survival.
Think about your own behavior as a consumer for a second. When's the last time you checked out a business online before reaching out? You looked at their website. You scrolled their social media. You checked the date on their last post. And if that last post was from three months ago, you probably had a thought, even if it was just for a split second, that maybe they weren't around anymore. Maybe they weren't serious. Maybe you should look at someone else.
Your potential customers are doing the same thing to you right now. Every day you're not showing up online is a day someone else is. And they're getting the call, the click, the contract that could have been yours.
I'm not saying this to guilt you. I'm saying it because I just lived it. When you go dark, people don't wait for you to come back. They just move on.
The Playbook I'm Running From Here
So what changes now? I'm not going to come back with some vague promise to "post more." That's not a plan. That's a wish. Here's the actual playbook I'm committing to, and honestly it's the same thing I'd tell any business owner to run.
**Show the work, not just the results.** Behind-the-scenes builds more trust than polished ads ever will. People don't connect with perfection. They connect with process. They want to see how the sausage gets made. From here on out, I'm building this agency in public. The wins, the lessons, the real stuff. If you're a business owner, you should be doing the same thing. Show people what you're working on. Let them into your world. That's how you build an audience that actually cares.
**Consistency beats perfection.** A decent post today beats a perfect post never. I spent 30 days not posting because nothing felt "ready." Meanwhile my competitors were putting out content that was just good enough and it was working. Stop waiting for the perfect graphic, the perfect caption, the perfect moment. Done is better than perfect. Published is better than planned. Every single time.
**Use AI to stay in the game.** This is the part most business owners are sleeping on. Automate the busywork so you actually show up. I work with AI tools every single day for my clients. Scheduling, content drafts, repurposing. There are systems out there that can keep your presence alive even when you're buried in work. If you're still doing everything manually and wondering why you can't keep up, that's your answer right there. The tools exist. Use them.
From Invisible to Inevitable
Here's where I'm at. I'm back. Not because things slowed down. They didn't. If anything I'm busier than ever. But I realized something that should have been obvious from the start. The work doesn't speak for itself. You have to speak for the work.
So that's what I'm doing. Follow along as I build this agency in public and help local businesses do the same. The posts are coming. The blogs are coming. The content is coming. Not because I suddenly found free time, but because I built a system that doesn't need me to have free time.
If you're a business owner reading this and you just thought "that sounds like me" then good. That means you get it. Now do something about it. Start posting. Start showing up. Start treating your online presence like what it actually is. The front door to your business.
And if you need help building that system so your digital presence doesn't depend on you having a free afternoon? That's literally what we do.
Let's go from invisible to inevitable. Together.
